It feels and looks almost malleable on the surface, and is quite soft in geological terms. It can be broken by hand with little effort. The earthy feel of the chalk is very clean and pristine. The chalk is formed primarily of calcite from microscopic plankton and other marine organisms which settled on ancient sea-beds. Over the millennia, pressure from tectonic activity and natural layering caused the calcite from the plankton to form into calcium carbonate..
